The site for the kindergarten in Tianshui, Gansu Province is small and lacks sufficient space for children to play.

People’s Architecture Office proposed a "3D playground" with flexible indoor and outdoor space. An extended spiral traffic hall is set up as the center of the “3D playground” volume, connecting classrooms and areas of different elevations. At each elevation, there are natural settings that readily facilitate indoor and outdoor teaching activities for children to learn from the natural world. The spiral hall eventually leads to an outdoor activity area on the rooftop.

The design has a flexible indoor and outdoor layout. In the summer, doors are lifted to convert the teaching space into an outdoor environment; in winter, the doors are closed to retain heat. The open door system also opens up the kindergarten to the village. Children being able to run and play throughout the year is essential for a kindergarten.
